We've been in the studio all week and all I can say is that the band and Efrat sound wonderful. Everybody is a pleasure to work with and this is the happiest I've been in a long time.

School in Katowice finished. School in Graz finished. School in Berlin finished (except for one more concert next week). I don't have to fly anywhere, go to any meetings, analyse any scores, grade any tests, rehearse any big bands, plan any concerts or do any lesson plans. I'm bored already! I have to start writing for my band (a pleasure!) and I'm getting reaquainted with my horns - my darling tuba missed me but my bass trombone is holding a grudge. Eating veggies, going for bike rides and looking forward to Chicago in two weeks. AAAAHHH....................

Things are speeding towords the end of the semester in Graz. Exams, recitals and concerts all next week. The legendary "Stage Band Party" was Thursday and it was a blast, as always. The police came and I had to talk them out of arresting the whole jazz department.

The Big Band from Katowice was here in Graz two weeks ago as the first part of an exchange that will see our KUG Jazz Orchestra in Polend next spring. The band from Katowice played great and Nikola´s piece was terrific. It was good for the students in Graz to hear a smoking band and see how the Polish kids really stick together and support each other.

I bought a great new mountain bike yesterday but it´s been pouring with rain all day today and I can´t bear to get it all wet, dirty and muddy the very first time I take it out. I know that´s a bit anal but I can´t help it.

I´m on Facebook now as well. I´ve tried to avoid that sort of stuff like the plague, but I got weak. next step will probably have to be myspace, but we´ll see...

Slowly thinking about the music for my new CD. We will be recording this September in Berlin and I´ve got a bunch of ideas and fragments, but it has to be turned into big band charts in the next few months.

God I´m so fucking boring...

The concert of our "Jewish Folk Songs" project is tonight. Efrat sounds wonderful and the HR Big Band is playing great. I don't want to make a big deal out of it, but it is pretty interesting to be performing jewish folk songs sung in Hebrew by a singer from Israel with a German radio big band (arranged by an polish-american brought up catholic!). Oli Leicht's CD "Räume" is out and it sounds very good. Oli wrote some excellent pieces and even the tuba player got his shit together in the end! Several of my students/former students are in the finals in international jazz composition competitions and I wish them all the best - congrats to Rob Spelberg, Reini Schmölzer and Andrew Murray. Uncle Ed is proud of you all!

One of the new projects I'm involved with is the Volvo sponsored "JOR". This band is made up of great musicians and was made possible by the hard work of Christian Sommerer. We just finished our first season of four concerts and it is turning out to be not just an excellent band, but something of a sensation in Regengsburg. A large group of fans has already formed and the city as well as Volvo is supporting the band wonderfully. Mit derlei launigen Moderationen zum kräftigen Trinkgenuss, seiner eigenen Karriere als vom FBI verfolgter Notendieb und Nebensächlichkeiten der Jazzgeschichte hat der schlacksige, in Wien lebende Chicagoan bereits die halbe Miete eingefahren. Stürmischer Applaus Deutlich mehr als die andere Hälfte verbuchte das in Bestform aufspielende Jazzorchester Regensburg (JOR) bei seinem letzten Auftritt in der ersten Konzertsaison im Leeren Beutel. Mit unglaublicher Präsenz, Spritzigkeit und Dynamik verpasste es den Neubearbeitungen und Originalarrangements der alten Duke-Ellington-Band eine Vitalität und Frische, die manch altertümliche Nummer in swingendem Glanz erstrahlen ließ. Vom schwungvollen „Rockin’ in Rhythm“, einer Tanznummer aus dem Jahr 1931, dem gemächlichen Blues „Don’t get around much anymore“ mit den typischen gezogenen Noten bis zu Teilen aus den groß angelegten konzertanten Suiten „Such Sweet Thunder“ und einer Bearbeitung von Ed(ward) Griegs „Peer Gynt“ blätterte das Stadtorchester viele unterschiedliche Facetten des Schaffens des großen Bandleaders auf. Der Meinung des Bassposaunisten Christian Sommerer, dass sich ein ganzes Konzertprogramm zu Ehren Duke Ellingtons – und seines Alter Egos Billy Strayhorn – wegen „der einzigartigen Harmonien, Rhythmen und wie er (Ellington) das Orchester einsetzt“, problemlos in die Programmreihe „Sounds of future“ einfügt, kann man nach diesem Abend nur zustimmen. Das Publikum jedenfalls goutierte das „Tribute“-Konzert mit Begeisterung und stürmischem Applaus. Als Zugabe wiederholte die flotte 15-Mann-und-eine-Frau-Combo „Morning Mood“, das Thema der Griegschen „Morgenstimmung“, mit dem großartigen Holzbläser Oliver Leicht als Solisten an der Klarinette. Eine extra Zugabennummer hatte Partyka nicht mehr im Köcher. Es ist erstaunlich genug, wie die überwiegend jungen Musiker aus fast allen Teilen der Republik in der kurzen Probezeit eines Nachmittags ein derart umfangreiches und anspruchsvolles Programm komplett einstudieren und wenig später mit Drive, Kraft, aber auch allen subtilen Feinheiten aufführen können. „Sensationell“ murmelte beileibe nicht nur einer der etwa 150 Zuhörer angesichts des Elans und der Strahlkraft des Orchesters. Cold, grey and nasty weather.

A review that fits my mood:

The last few months of 2008 were incredibly busy but very musically fulfilling. The tour and CD recording with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and the brass quintet was hard but fun. The Kreisler recording with Theo Bleckmann and the HR Big Band went well. The HR Band sounds great and is ultra professional. The Oli Leicht CD will also be fine (I hope). It was the very last thing everybody did before Xmas and we were all a bit frazzled but Oli's music was terrific and it should be fine (except for the tuba player). After two days off I worked with the excellent "Jazz Orchester Regensburg" and then went on to the Blue Note Big Band for a four day workshop. The concert we performed on January 1st went very well. After four short days of sleeping it's now back to work in Graz. I hope my students still remember me, I know I was gone too often in the fall, but I also think that I can offer my students more if I continue to be an active musician and not just a "teacher". With the moron Bush leaving office soon I don't know who I will be able to rant against, but I'm sure I will find something or someone. 2009 is shaping up to be an equally busy year, with interesting projects and CD recordings both as a sideman and leader. The EPJO will be going inro the studio in August and the brass project will get recorded in Septemeber. Before that I've got to write for the HR Big Band and there is a rapidly approaching deadline for the Flip Phillip/Ed Partyka Dectet recording in February. I suppose I can sleep when I'm dead.....
